Looking to crochet something super durable? The waistcoat stitch is perfect to use when making heavy duty bags or anything that's going to get a lot of wear out of it. This stitch isn't hard to make either; it is made using a single crochet stitch.
Most crochet bags are made with medium weight DK and worsted weight yarns. Lighter yarns are generally not robust enough, but they are sometimes good for making string market bags that fold down into the smallest space possible between uses.
I use mainly cotton yarns in my crochet, so the majority of mine are cotton as that's what my leftovers are. However, you don't have to use cotton. Any yarn will work just fine. I like the results mercerised cottons give.
Using a round base can prevent sagging when you place items inside your bag. Crochet stitches naturally have some stretch, and a round base can help distribute the weight evenly around the bottom of your bag.
Does this mean you can sell crochet items made from someone else's pattern? Yes, absolutely! There is no specific legal language or precedent that shows that a maker of a product can not sell that product however he/she chooses.
Crochet can be both an inexpensive hobby or a more costly one, depending on your choices. To start crocheting, you need only a crochet hook and some yarn. Hooks generally cost between $1 and $10. Yarn varies in price depending on the type and quality.
Freeform crochet, also called scrumbling, simply means that you are free to use the yarns and stitches that appeal to you and to work them in a multi-directional way without a pattern or rules. You can use freeform crochet to create art pieces as well as clothing, accessories, and other items.
The oldest form of crochet is slip-stitch crochet, but that is a term we use today. It was known as “shepherd's knitting” in the British Isles and had other names in other languages.
The double crochet stitch, followed closely by the Treble crochet stitch, uses the least amount of yarn for the basic crochet stitches. At the same time, the trellis stitch uses the least amount of yarn when it comes to crochet lace stitches.
However, it is also the smallest of the four stitches and results in a relatively dense fabric. As such, its yarn usage per unit area is probably the highest of the four basic stitches. This basket is made from single crochet stitches which produce quite a dense, stiff fabric.
You can also stiffen crochet projects using starch. This is how many crocheters block their crocheted doilies. You can use the powdered kind that is dissolved in water or you can use the pressurized starch sprays that are available in the laundry section.
