Tips for making Christmas Tree Oreos

Use parchment paper piping bags.Normally I use my frosting piping bags when I am decorating any cookies I am making. However, when it comes to working with melted chocolate I find it works a lot better. If you do not have parchment paper piping bags on hand you can use a plastic piping bag but make sure you use a very small pastry tip like a 00 pastry tip. The Christmas tree will come out a little fatter but it will have a similar look.

Use decorating tweezers.Working with a single sprinkle can be a pain if you are trying to do it with your fingers. I find usingdecorating tweezersmakes it much easier for me to put the star on the top of the Oreo Christmas Tree and for the Christmas tree trunk.

Melt Chocolate with a double boiler.Chocolate melts better when you are using a double boiler versus using the microwave. If you have never used a double boiler to melt chocolate, be sure to readhow to melt chocolate with a double boiler. It is super easy to do!

Use shallow bowls for the melted chocolate.I find using shallow bowls much easier and cleaner to use when I am dipping the Oreos into the chocolate.

Line Baking sheets withsilicon baking matsor parchment paper.Clean up and making the Chocolate dipped Oreos are much easier to work with if you have a baking sheet to place to cookies on and they are lined.

Variations of this recipe

Change up the Oreo cookie. I use mint Oreos when making them because of the green filling but you can use double stuffed Oreos, golden Oreos, mint Oreo cookies or any other flavor you want.

Change up the chocolate. I like using white chocolate so it looks like snow but you can also use milk chocolate or semi-sweet chocolate for dipping the bottom of the Oreo cookies.

Change up the decorations. I like using sprinkles for decorating but you can also use other candies like mini M&M candies.

Go Simple. I like adding the touches of a tree trunk with the brown sprinkle and the ornaments with the tiny sprinkles but you can totally leave them as a simple tree which will look super adorable too.

What is the best type of chocolate to use?

When you are making these Christmas chocolate-covered Oreos there are a few different options for the type of chocolate you use for the dipped bottoms. When it comes to making the tree decoration I do suggest using colored candy melts because you do not have to worry about coloring the chocolate.

Melting Chocolate Wafers. These are specifically formulated for easy melting and dipping, and they come in a variety of flavors, including milk, dark, and white chocolate. They are convenient and often produce a smooth, glossy finish.

Chocolate Chips. You can use chocolate chips when making this recipe. However keep in mind that chocolate chips may not be as fluid as melting wafers, they can still be used for dipping. It’s recommended to add a small amount of oil or shortening to thin the chocolate and improve its dipping consistency. This recipe will work with white chocolate chips, milk chocolate chips or dark chocolate chips.

High-Quality Chocolate Bars.Using high-quality chocolate bars can result in a richer flavor profile. Choose a chocolate with a high cocoa content for a more intense chocolate taste.

Do I need to use a Double Boiler?

I find it much easier to melt chocolate when I use a double boiler, however, you can melt the chocolate in the microwave. Use a microwave-safe bowl and heat the chocolate in 30-second intervals, mixing in between each time to make sure the chocolate doesn’t burn.

How to Store Chocolate Covered Christmas Oreos

After dipping the Oreo cookies in chocolate, allow them to cool completely on a parchment-lined baking sheet. This will ensure that the chocolate hardens properly.

If you plan to consume the cookies within a day or two, you can store them at room temperature in an airtight container. Make sure the container is sealed tightly to prevent air and moisture from affecting the cookies.

If you live in a warm climate or the room temperature is particularly high, it’s best to store the chocolate-dipped Oreos in the fridge. Place them in an airtight container or wrap them tightly with plastic wrap. This will help the chocolate to stay firm and prevent the filling from melting.
