The Bag Lining

  • The bag is made in one crochet piece with a bag lining hand sewn on the inside.
  • The bag lining can be any color or type of lining fabrics you want to use.
  • I used a bright red to compliment the colors in the bag, but I also bought a gold-colored fabric.
  • The lining is needed, not only to protect your stuff on the inside but also to be able to add the magnetic snap for closing.

The Bag Strap

The bag strap I attached is a thick gold-colored chain that I bought from a local craft store.

I also got the key ring clips there also to attach the strap to either side of the bag.

I needed an extra key ring clip for the tassel charm which I added.

Making the tassel is optional of course, but a fun little charm to make the bag stand out!

How To Crochet A Bag

  1. The Body Of The Bag

With the raffia make a slip knot and ch 33, ch 1, turn,
Row 1 – sc into every ch, ch 1, turn,
Rep the last row until the piece measures – 38 cm / 15 inches
Cut yarn and secure into the last loop, (to pull through and secure into a knot).
Your piece should measure – 38cm / 15 inches in height and 25cm / 9.5 inches in width.

  2. The Bag Lining

    Cut a piece of fabric – that measures 41 cm / 16 inches x 27 cm / 10.5 inches.Crochet Bag Pattern For Beginners (8)

  3. The Magnetic Snaps/Fastening

Decide where you want the bag magnetic snaps to go – I placed mine – 4 cm / 1.5 inches from the top of the bag and 4 cm / 1.5 inches from the bottom of the bag.
They need to be in place before you stitch the lining down.
I made two small slits with my scissors into the fabric and poked one side of the magnetic snap into it.
The other was fixed into the raffia – on the underside of the bag.Crochet Bag Pattern For Beginners (9)

  4. Stitch In The Lining

Lay the fabric pieces onto the raffia, leaving a small seam allowance.
This means that you turn the edges of the fabric over for 3 cm / 1 inch- so you have a neat edge for sewing.
Thread your sewing needle and hand stitch the lining into place, by doing a simple running stitch around the edges of the fabric.
If you do small stitches and catch the inside loops of the raffia, your stitches will not be shown on the right side of the bag.Crochet Bag Pattern For Beginners (10)

  5. Crochet The Sides Of The Bag Together

Turn the bag inside out – with the wrong sides facing you and the right sides together, and single crochet into each side seam.
SC into every connecting chain for 13 cm / 5 inches.Crochet Bag Pattern For Beginners (11)

  6. Secure the Edge

Cut the yarn and secure it into the last loop (to pull through and secure it into a knot).Crochet Bag Pattern For Beginners (12)

  7. Weave in The Loose Ends

Weave in any loose ends then turn the bag the right side out.
You will be able to fold the front flap over to close it.Crochet Bag Pattern For Beginners (13)

  8. Add The Chain Strap

Add the keyring clips and rings to either side of the bag and connect the chain strap to the rings.
You may need pliers or a tool to help you to do this.Crochet Bag Pattern For Beginners (14)

  9. You Can Add A Tassel Charm

    If you want to add a tassel to your bag, view thistutorial here. – How To Make Tassels {Photo + Video Tutorial}
You can also watch a video on myYouTube channel here.
Leave a long length of yarn for the top section of your tassel, so that you can thread the beads etc onto it, loop over the ring of your ring clip, and push back down through the beads, securing underneath and cutting the raffia.
This will hide any untidy loose ends and be hidden underneath the beads.
Push the bead down a little to hide the knot and your tassel charm should be ready to attach to your bag.Crochet Bag Pattern For Beginners (15)
