Design Inspiration

The pattern for the granny square itself was inspired by a trip out to Kimmeridge Bay. I wanted to recreate the pattern of the ammonite.

This crochet bag started out as a book cozy but I realised when I started working on it that it would make a fabulous bag.

When we go on days out I take my current book to read on the journey and this bag is perfect!

A paperback fits comfortably inside with room for a notebook and pen. E-readers will also fit inside with room to spare.

Two 100g balls of yarn fit comfortably inside so you could easily use it for a project bag when you’re on the move.

Of course you can use the granny square bag for everyday use too.

The structure of the bag can be worked with any design granny square.

Pair this crochet bag with a granny square top. There’s a few to choose from in this collection of boho crochet patterns.

How the granny square bag pattern is worked

Two granny squares are crocheted first (one for the front and one for the back of the bag).

The first two rounds of the granny square are treble crochet (US double crochet). The next round is double crochet (US single crochet). The granny stitch begins in the next round.

I crocheted a total of ten rounds. You can reduce the rounds to make a smaller bag or increase the rounds to make it larger.

After crocheting the granny squares, an inner lining is made in herringbone half treble crochet (US herringbone half double crochet).

The herringbone stitch and the yarn gives a stretchy fabric so the lining is a little smaller than the granny squares. This makes the inner pouch sit comfortably inside the bag.

I used herringbone half treble crochet for the lining because this stitch gives a tighter fabric and is perfect for making sure nothing is able to fall out of the bag.

The lining is sewn to the top of one granny square first and then the other end of the lining is sewn to the top of the second granny square using running stitch.

The inner lining sewn to the top of the granny squares for front and back

With right side facing outwards, the two granny squares are sewn together down the side seam, along the bottom of the granny squares and then up the side seam.

Sewing them together with running stitch ensures the stitches do not show on the right side of the work.

The bag handles are crocheted last using the no-stretch strap.

The handles are secured by tying through the top left and right corner spaces of the granny square.

Alternatively, the handles can be sewn into place.

However, if you tie them, you can switch up your granny square crochet purse with either shorter or longer handles.

Yarn

This is a fabulous crochet project to use up your yarn stash.

I used Hayfield Spirit DK for the granny squares. It’s a self-striping yarn that’s great quality and hard-wearing.

You could use any dk self-striping yarn to get the same effect or choose a different colour for each round of the granny square.

You can use any DK yarn for the lining.

Match it to the colours of your granny square to give it that professional finish.

Pattern Notes

  • A 4mm crochet hook is used for the granny squares and the lining
  • A 4.5mm hook is used for the bag handles
  • This pattern uses 4 chains with a slip stitch to the first chain to form a circle (I haven’t used a magic circle to begin the granny square as I know this can be difficult for beginner crocheters). Choose whichever method you prefer
  • Chain 2 for the lining does not count as a stitch
  • Chain 3 counts as a stitch

How to sew the granny square bag together (UK and US)

(see photos in How the Pattern is Worked)

Decide which is the top and which is the bottom of your 2 squares.

Working on WS of granny square, sew inner lining to top of one of the granny squares using running stitch making sure you leave the ch sps of the corner sps as these will be used to either tie your handles or sew your handles on.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Repeat with the other end of the lining and the second granny square.

Using the same sewing stitch, sew sides of the inner lining together. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Working on the RS of the granny squares facing outwards, sew the side, bottom and side seam of the granny squares (do not sew the lining, just the granny square). Fasten off and sew in ends.

Secure bag handles either side through corner square at top of bag.
