Pattern Notes

First, you’ll crochet the back of the bag and then the first with either an invisible pocket or a visible one. Finally, you crochet the sides of the bag and assemble it all. Optionally, the pocket has a zipper and the bag has leather straps and plastic canvas with felt (or lining) on the inside. Please keep in mind that this pattern used to be a mystery crochet along pattern and is broken up like that.

Pick 1 of these 4 stitches (I picked the one with a *):

All of these stitches are taught in the video above. Please watch ALL of it for the most fun and best results in this bag backpack.

  • Single crochet (sc)
  • Waistcoat stitch* (wst)
  • Linked double crochet (ldc)
  • Linked treble crochet (ltr)

Chain 42 (for the sc or wst stitch), 43 for the ldc, or 44 for the ltr

R1: not counting the 1st chain from the hook, 1 st per ch (41 sts per row) equal to about 10 inches, turn

NOTE: Measure your piece after you crocheted 2 rows for a more accurate measurement. Measurement is more important than stitch or row count.

Turning chains (none of them are counted as stitches):

  • No chain for sc
  • Ch 1 for wst
  • Ch 2 for ldc
  • Ch 3 for ltr

R2: 1 st per st, turn

Repeat R2 until you have a piece that is 10 (width) x 11 (height) inches

Pick 1 of these 3 options:

  • No pocket – Make another pack panel as the front panel
  • Visible pocket – Make another pack panel as the front panel and a pocket
  • Invisible pocket – crochet the below pattern and a pocket

Chain 42 (for the sc or wst stitch), 43 for the ldc or 44 for the ltr

R1: not counting the 1st chain from the hook, 1 st per ch (41 sts per row) equal to about 10 inches, turn

R2: 1 st per st, turn

Repeat R2 until you have a piece that is 10 (width) x 8.5 (height) inches, then do the following (watch the video for more info!!!):

Opening row: 1 st in each of the next 10 sts (if you used the ldc or ltr, crochet sc for this row – for sc or wst, crochet as normal), ch 21, sk 21 sts, 1 st in each of the next 10 sts, turn

Next row: 1 st in each of the next 10 sts, 1 st per ch, 1 st in each of the next 10 sts, turn

Now repeat R2 again until your piece is 11 inches in height.

Both pieces – from Parts 1 and 2) need to match in width (10) and height (11).

Now let’s make the pocket (below) if you chose to make one.

R1: starting from the 2nd ch from the hook, 1 sc per st, turn

Sew the optional zipper to the opening, sew the pocket (visible or invisible) to the front panel, and then sew the bottom of each front and back panel together using the mattress stitch.

*** Optionally add the fabric before sewing the side panels on.

Now add your straps. I added leather straps and rings, but you can also crochet them.

Finally, optionally, add the plastic canvas and felt/fabric to the inside with hot glue (if you didn’t add fabric yet), including a button or snaps.

You can totally add an additional zipper or more pockets or embroidery or iron-on.
