One Hour Stocking - Easy Free Crochet Pattern - Winding Road Crochet (2024)

Create a handmade holiday starting with this quick and easy one hour crochet stocking. Since they only take an hour, you will be able to make a stocking for everyone in the family.

Below you will find the complete pattern and instructional photos for this pattern. You will also find all the materials, stitches, gauge, and sizing information.

Is it really a One Hour Stocking Crochet Pattern?

Yes, at least for me it was and I am not a fast crocheter. I like to crochet a a nice steady pace. I timed myself and I work up about 24 double crochet and minute and based on how many stitches are in this pattern, the match points to the pattern taking 45 minutes for me to complete. I added an extra 15 minutes because we need to take a break every once in a while.

But yes, you should be able to complete this pattern in under an hour if you are focused. Which is incredible because it is a pretty good size Christmas stocking. Work up a 1-hour stocking every night of the week and it will only take a week to make stockings for the whole family. (Unless you have a really large family.)

Get Creative with Your Crochet Stocking

Stocking are meant to be unique, decorative and fun. Since this stocking only took one hour to complete, I decided to whip up a variety of stockings as examples. The main pattern below uses Lion Brand Color Made Easy (a size 5 yarn), but I also worked the pattern up using 2 strands of Red Heart Super Saver (size 4 yarn), one strand of Red Heart Super Saver, and Bernat Velvet (Size 5 yarn, but a little thin for size 5).

Every yarn type gave me a beautiful and unique stocking. I even played around with cuff vs. no cuff, and heels patches and stripes, just to help inspire you to get creative. Make sure to check out the adjustments below the pattern to see the instructions for each different stocking.

One Hour Crochet Stocking

Notes:
-Written in US terms.
– I do not count my CH2, turning chain, as a stitch. (In the video I show a trick on how to have a less noticeable seam by Chaining 1 as a turning chain.)
– If you want a heel patch then work rows 13-17 in the heel color.
– If you want a different color cuff, then you will want to change to the cuff color right before row 34 and complete the rest of the pattern with the cuff color.

Row 1: CH2, Work 12 DC into a Magic Circle. SLST to first DC. (12)
Alternative Row 1: CH3, Work 12 DC into the 3rd CH from the hook. SLST to first DC. (12)

Row 2: CH2, *DC in next ST, 2DC in next ST* repeat from *to* a total of 6 times. SLST to first DC. (18)

Row 3: CH2, *DC in next 2 STs, 2DC in next ST* repeat from *to* a total of 6 times. SLST to first DC. (24)

Row 4: CH2, *DC in next 3 STs, 2DC in next ST* repeat from *to* a total of 6 times. SLST to first DC. (30)

Rows 5-9: CH2, DC in next 30 STs. SLST to first DC. (30)

Row 10: CH2, DC in next 22 STs. Leave last 8 STs unworked. (22)

Rows 11-17: CH2, turn, DC in next 22 STs.

At the end of row 17, SLST to the first DC of row 17.

Row 17 completes the heel of the stocking. Now we will begin adding height to our stocking. We will come back and sew up the heel at the end of the pattern.

Row 18: CH2, work 2 DC into the side of each row for rows 10-17. Work a DC into the next 8 STs (these are the unworked stitches of row 9), Work 2 DC into each of the other side of rows 10-17. SLST to the first DC. (40 DC)

Row 19-33: CH2, DC in next 40 STs, SLST to first DC. (40)

Row 34: CH2, DC in next 40 STs, CH 10, SLST to last DC worked, SLST to first DC of row. (40 DC, 10 CH)

You can stop at row 34 if you do not want a cuff on the stocking.

Row 35: CH2, turn, DC in the BLO of next 40 STs. SLST to first DC. (40)

The back loop only of row 35 should be the loop facing the outside of the stocking.

Row 36-38: CH2, DC in next 40 STs, SLST to first DC. (40)

Fasten off and weave in all your ends.

Your stocking is almost done. Just take a piece of yarn that is the same color as your heel and use a whip stitch to sew up the opening at the back of the heel. Now your one hour crochet stocking is complete.

Mini Crochet Stocking

Yarn: 2.8 oz or 146 yds of Red Heart Super Saver (size 4 yarn)
Size: 12.5 inches tall and 8.75 inches wide.
Hook: 5mm (Size H) hook

After making the first stocking, I thought I would find out how the pattern would change if I used size 4 yarn instead of size 5. The result was medium size stocking.

I gave this stocking a toe and heel patch. I worked rows 1-3, 13-17, and 34-38 in white and the rest of the stocking in red. This is a great size for a larger family or for the grandchildren’s stockings at grandma’s house.

Striped Crochet Stocking

Yarn: 7 oz or 364 yds of Red Heart Super Saver (size 4 yarn)
Size: 16.5 inches tall and 12 inches wide.
Hook: 6.5 mm (Size K) hook

Stockings can be so fun and colorful, I knew I just had to make a striped stocking. With this stocking, I tried two new things. First, instead of using a size 5 yarn, I used two strands of size 4 yarn held together. This did result in a slightly larger stocking.

The colors I used for this striped stocking were Red Heart Super Saver Turquoise, Red Cherry, Spring Green, and white. I carried my yarn up the inside of the stocking where I could, to help save on weaving in ends.

I will list what color I used for each row in case you would like to copy the stripes.

White – Rows 1-3, and 13-17
Turquoise – Rows 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32, and 34.
Cherry Red – 5, 9, 19, 23, 27, and 31.
Spring Green – 7, 11, 21, 25, 29, and 33.

And that is it, just a little extra color and a basic stocking with no cuff.

One Hour Stocking - Easy Free Crochet Pattern - Winding Road Crochet (11)

Velvet Crochet Stocking

Yarn: 4.5 oz or 135 yds of Bernat Velvet Yarn (size 5 yarn)
Size: 16 inches tall by 11 inches wide.
Hook: 6.5 mm (Size K) Hook

This velvet crochet stocking is super luxurious. I made it exactly like the pattern above just without a cuff. Bernat Velvet yarn is a little thinner than Lion Brand Color made easy so there bigger holes between the stitches. This is not noticeable while the stockings are hanging up but may be seen more if the stockings are stuffed to the brim.

If the holes bother you, you can use a size I (6mm) hook instead of the 6.5mm hook and that should give you a tighter stitch, but will also result in a smaller stocking.
