What Skills are Practiced While Crafting?

If you’re a regular reader of Fun-A-Day, then you probably already know I am a huge fan of process art for kids. I typically opt for open-ended art activities over highly directed crafts with rigid instructions. That said, there’s a time and place for everything.

The only time crafting isn’t ideal is when adults step in and insist that students make “cookie-cutter” crafts. That leaves no room for creativity and individuality.

But crafting, if done with students in mind, certainly has a place in the early education classroom. Us adults just have to let the kids create as they see fit. In fact, if done the “right” way, there are a ton of benefits of crafting with kids!

Here are a few skills they can practice with crafting:

  • Color identification
  • Directional terms
  • Fine motor skills
  • Hand strengthening
  • Scissor skills
  • Following simple directions
  • Following multi-step directions
  • Shapes

On top of practicing all of these skills (and more), kids can learn about certain topics through their crafts. I like to base our crafts around the learning objectives of each unit. Here are a few topics the kids can learn about with the Easter crafts for preschoolers:

  • Rabbits
  • Life cycle of a chicken
  • Oviparous animals
  • Farm animals
  • Gardening
  • Spring blooms
  • Insects

There are so many skills and topics the kids can learn about with Easter crafts!

These are just a few of the items I like to keep on hand for crafting during this time of year. The Easter crafts linked below will provide more specific materials lists and activity directions.
