Granny Squares (18 Easy Beginner Crochet Patterns) (2024)

A variety of different Granny Square Crochet Patterns and how to join them to make patchwork purses, afghans, scarves and shawls

How many of you learned to crochet by making granny squares? I did! I remember being on a long road trip and my Mom, Sister and I crocheting different pattern granny squares.

That was a really fun way to learn different crochet stitches and patterns. The squares worked up nice and fast so that by the time you were bored with one stitch, you could move on to the next square.

Eventually, those squares were joined together into a large afghan. Wonder what ever happened to that.

Granny Squares are super rewarding to make because they work up so fast. You can whip up a bunch of them in a really short period of time. Use heavier yarn and a larger crochet hook and you can finish an entire afghan in no time.

And crochet granny squares are certainly not just for making large blankets or afghans. Grannies make great patchwork scarves, pillow cases, purses, shawls, dog beds, you name it.

Change your crochet yarn or change the stitch or color and you have a whole different look.

How do you crochet a granny square?

A granny is a really good beginner crochet project because it can be made with basic stitches as well as more advanced. It’s a small project that gives you the chance to practice the same stitches over and over which helps you even out your stitches.

Plus, a granny is usually fairly small so that it can be crocheted very quickly. This not only helps to keep you motivated, but it also gives you the confidence to try a more difficult pattern.

Check out the video below to learn how you can make a basic granny square pattern.
